About
Refusés is an experimental contemporary art gallery, based in London and New York. We are focused on the idea of the exhibition space as a place of exchange. Fundamentally, we see the gallery as a meeting point of ideas, people, objects and timelines. Refusés is committed to bringing this to the forefront of discussion. We put on exhibitions and special projects that investigate this guiding question.
Our programme is organized around the idea of finding curiosity, conversation and conviviality in contemporary art. We push against the static white cube and explore how to go beyond this form. Refusés is specialized in dynamic spaces, strong programming and interactive exhibitions that encourage discourse. We are on a mission to explore how spatial context affects the experience, interpretation and absorption of contemporary art.
Beyond the White Cube
Refusés pushes against conventional exhibition formats. We explore:
Alternative spatial contexts
Interactive and participatory exhibitions
Site-responsive projects
Private and public hybrid spaces
Strong curatorial programming that prioritizes exchange- whatever that may look like
Our exhibitions are conceived to activate audiences, intellectually, socially, and spatially.
A Global Contemporary Art Platform
Refusés is building a global brand that connects artists across the world.
While rooted in London and New York, our vision is international. We work with artists from diverse geographies and cultural backgrounds, creating bridges between cities, audiences, and collector communities.
Our ambition is to use our international platform to connect emerging and established artists globally. A truly international venture, we are comiited to fostering cross-border artistic dialogue. For us this means to create international visibility for artists beyond their local ecosystems, and build a network of collectors engaged with contemporary practice worldwide
We believe the future of contemporary art is collaborative, cross-cultural, and internationally fluid.
Why “Refusés”?
The name references the historical Salon des Refusés, where artists rejected by the official Paris Salon exhibited independently, shifting the course of modern art.
Refusés champions that spirit: platforming artists who operate outside rigid market formulas, while building sustainable visibility and collector relationships.
